The Aazhimala Shiva Temple in Kerala

The Aazhimala Shiva Temple

Perched on a cliff overlooking the Arabian Sea near Vizhinjam, the Aazhimala Shiva Temple is one of the most breathtaking places in Trivandrum. Located in Pulinkudi, about 18 km from the city centre, this coastal shrine draws pilgrims and travellers alike for its spiritual charm and postcard-perfect setting.

A Statue Like No Other

The heart of the Aazhimala Shiva Temple is its towering 58-foot Gangadhareshwara statue of Lord Shiva, the tallest Shiva sculpture in Kerala. Crafted in concrete by artist P. S. Devadathan, the statue took six years to complete and was unveiled to the public on December 31, 2021. It depicts Shiva as a powerful, flowing figure holding a trishula while carrying Goddess Ganga on his head — a striking sight, especially at sunrise when the morning light falls across the sea and statue together.

History and Architecture

While the statue itself is a modern addition, the temple is believed to date back to the 8th century AD, constructed during the Pandya dynasty. Its architecture follows a Dravidian style reminiscent of temples in Tamil Nadu, and the shrine faces east, standing at an elevation of roughly 72 feet above the coastline. Local legend also connects the site to the Pandavas, who are believed to have spent time here during their exile — adding an extra layer of mythology to an already atmospheric location.

What Makes It Special

Unlike many inland temples, Aazhimala sits right along the coast, so a visit here combines devotion with scenery. The sea breeze, cliffside views, and quiet green surroundings make it a peaceful escape, not just a religious stop. It’s easy to pair a visit here with nearby Kovalam Beach, Chowara Beach, or Vizhinjam Lighthouse for a full day out along Trivandrum’s southern coastline.

Festivals

The temple’s main annual festival, Utsavam, is celebrated in the Malayalam month of Makaram (January–February). Maha Shivaratri is also observed with special significance, along with the Naranga Vilakku ritual, drawing large crowds of devotees.

Visitor Tips

  • Best time to visit: Early morning or late evening, when the light on the statue and sea is most striking.
  • Dress code: Traditional and modest attire is recommended.
  • Restrictions: Smoking, drinking, chewing tobacco or betel leaves, and spitting inside the premises are strictly prohibited.
  • Getting there: The temple lies just off the Vizhinjam–Poovar road, near Pulinkudi Junction, easily reachable by taxi or auto-rickshaw from Trivandrum city or Kovalam.

Whether you’re drawn by faith, architecture, or simply a love of dramatic coastal views, the Aazhimala Shiva Temple deserves a spot on any Trivandrum itinerary.
